Lacking self confidence
Self confidence, or the lack of it seems to be the core issue for most people in our society. Where does it come from and how do you get it? Are key questions for many of us.
I think that the enculturation that nearly all of us go through as we are growing up seeks to convince us, through, school, media and advertising, that we will find confidence when we are 'successful' in our designated field. For some this is clearly true and yet I get to meet an awful lot of 'successful' people who are still terribly lacking in their own self confidence.
The fundamental problem, I believe, is that our society and our enculturation seeks to persuade us to conform, to fit in, to do the 'safe' job or pursue the 'safe' career rather than asking us what we are brilliant and gifted at and what we are passionate about and encouraging us to pursue those things.
No one ever excels with skills they have acquired, because there will always be someone who is gifted, innately talented in the same area who will always be better at it. If we can focus on our own innate talents, rather than struggling with acquired skills, we have the potential to excel. And when we are being excellent we will also be confident in ourselves and our relationships.
If we can identify our innate talents and work with them, practice them, hone them until we are brilliant, we will start to build up our confidence. If we can use our innate talents to do something we feel passionate about we will be brilliant and motivated. Who could doubt that when we are brilliant and motivated we create the opportunity to maximise our success?
Understanding our innate talents and our passions and living them is what authenticity is all about.
